What is your job title?: Special education teacher

Number of years in profession: 8

How did you get into education? My career began when I moved back to Craig after I graduated from college. I had a degree in elementary education, and since there was not an opening for me, I decided to take a paraprofessional position in the Craig Middle School resource room. One thing led to another, and I was offered a teaching position in the special education department. I went back to school to earn my master’s in special education and here I am.

What is the most challenging part of your job? The biggest challenge for me is making sure that all my students get the support and services they require.

What is the most rewarding part of your job? I am pleased to say the rewards in my job happen with all the little challenges my students overcome.

What is a teaching tool or method that is unique to you? I try and use as much humor as possible. Kids these days have many pressures, and a little extra laughter is always appreciated.

Briefly describe your most heartwarming teaching experience: Even at this level in school, I am always moved by the notes and trinkets that students give to me. I feel that if they take the time to write me a thank you or give me a gift, I must have made an impact on them.

What are your favorite activities when you are not at school? When not in school, I enjoy raising an 8-year-old daughter, playing with my nieces and scrapbooking. My family is very close and we enjoy spending time together.

What is one thing about your profession that you wish the public at large understood? I wish the public understood the dedication of teachers to this profession. We are always learning about new techniques and ideas that help support students as they learn. Many of us spend our summer months going to conferences and workshops looking for the latest research. We earn graduate degrees to be better educators.

What do you like most about Craig Middle School? I have enjoyed working in this school since Day 1. I have been led by great administrators, worked with outstanding colleagues and enjoyed hundreds of students as they make the difficult transition from child to adult.
