Running for an elected seat is a big commitment, especially when the term is four years. CNCC and Moffat County School District are huge economic drivers for Moffat County, especially because in order to attract people to Craig, you need a strong educational base.

MCSD board has four seats up for vote and CNCC has three. We’re encouraging residents to step up and serve on these boards. We’d also like to thank those who currently serve on the boards, as we know it takes time and commitment to serve as an elected official.

Those who run must understand that CNCC and MCSD face different challenges.

CNCC is in a wonderful position to grow and continues to be a viable and irreplaceable institution in Moffat County. The programs offered and the students it attracts are impressive.

Those who run for a seat on the college’s governing board should be forward-thinking and ready to help CNCC take the next steps to success.

With our current economic challenges with coal, we need CNCC to continue its role of bringing new residents to Craig. The college is a commercial entity that is not energy-related, and growing CNCC to its full potential is beneficial to Craig’s long-term success.

As CNCC grows, a different picture is happening with K-12 education in Moffat County.

Enrollment numbers and the financial stability of MCSD continue to shrink. Teachers are leaving the district at a rapid rate.

Those who run for the MCSD board need to have a clear understanding of how to read financial statements, balance a budget and stand up for quality education that our children deserve. They also need to ask tough questions of the administration.

Transparency is vitally important, and the newly elected school board members should be able to look at an issue from both sides and ask pertinent questions.

The school district is in a very fragile state. We need individuals who can make a commitment to assembling change, because the minds of our children depend on it.

We commend those who currently serve on both boards, and we look forward to meeting the new leaders who will take office in November.
