Our View: To your health

A new year always brings with it resolutions. It’s a time when millions of Americans vow to lose weight, quit smoking, exercise and just do better.

So in that spirit, the Craig Daily Press resolves to help readers meet their health and fitness goals throughout the year.

In 2006, we promise to help our readers keep their healthy resolutions by providing more articles and news stories about health issues that affect everyone. We’ll provide more tips from experts — local and national — about how Moffat County residents can incorporate healthy eating and activities into their lives.

We’ll also offer the latest news in exercise trends and how families can increase physical activity while spending time together.

We know that health and fitness goes beyond looking great in a bathing suit.

Issues of obesity affect everyone.

In 2004, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released an alarming study by researchers at RTI International about the cost of obesity.

U.S. obesity-attributable medical expenditures reached $75 billion in 2003, according to the study. Taxpayers financed about half those costs through Medicare and Medicaid. Total state-level expenditure estimates in 2003 dollars range from $87 million in Wyoming to $7.7 billion in California.

In December, the CDC reported half of Americans ages 55 to 64 have high blood pressure — a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke — and two in five are obese.

The Daily Press also will cover issues of health care costs and access to health insurance.

It’s no small matter.

The CDC reports that the United States spent $1.7 trillion — or 15 percent of the gross domestic product — on health care in 2003. That works out to $5,671 for every man, woman and child.

In addition to increased coverage of health issues, each Monday, the Daily Press will offer features on health and fitness in Health Watch.

Finally, we invite you to share with us what health care topics you want to read about. Please call us at 824-7031 to share your ideas on health.
