Officials: House fire’s cause unclear
Craig fire officials haven’t determined what caused a fire that consumed a mobile home on Jeffcoat Drive last week.
Craig Fire Chief Chris Nichols said a fire started under the middle bedroom of the home at about 11 a.m. April 14.
However, fire officials said they have ended their investigation of the fire which destroyed the home.
Sheila Glaze was in the process of moving into the home and apparently was vacuuming in one of the house’s back rooms when the fire started. A plumber, who was working underneath the home at the time of the fire, was taken to the hospital for treatment.
Several neighbors who came outside to watch the blaze questioned whether the house burned because it was a “meth lab.” Nichols said that report is unsubstantiated.
“There were no items found that would lead us to believe that there was a drug lab on the premise,” he said. “None of those kinds of items were found.”
A man who was tried in federal court for crimes committed in Craig listed the home at 2221 Jeffcoat as his address in 2004, police said.
Lynn Horn, a previous convicted felon, repeatedly was arrested on drug and weapons charges in Craig, although the arrests occurred as a result of vehicle stops.
Craig police Lt. John Forgay said officers would investigate the fire if the fire departments became suspicious of illegal activity.
“I’m sure that people keep on eye on things, but we can’t relate the fire to any criminal activity,” Forgay said. “Apparently nothing showed up that we felt was necessary to look into.”
