The Moffat County Commission Tuesday unanimously approved extending an offer to Kerri Klein to serve as the next director of the Moffat County Department of Social Services.

Klein, a current resident of Lakewood, is a past Moffat County employee and worked for the social services department.

If Klein accepts the offer she will replace current director Marie Peer who is retiring Jan. 4, 2013 after a 44-year career with Moffat County.

The county received a total of 13 applications for the job, Moffat County Human Resources Director Lynette Running said Monday.

The county commissioners then worked with Peer and Running to work the candidate pool down to five before conducting interviews on Friday, Commissioner Tom Gray said during Tuesday’s meeting.

Recently elected commissioners Chuck Grobe and John Kinkaid were invited to serve on the hiring committee, which included opportunities to submit questions and participate in the interview process.

Though Grobe was present for the entirety, Kinkaid opted not to stay for the candidate interviews saying Tuesday it appeared to him that the current commission had a good handle on the process and — because he has not yet been sworn into office — he did not have a vote on the decision.

At the end of the day it came down to two candidates, Klein and an applicant from Maryland, Commissioner Tom Mathers said.

Though the hiring committee believed both were qualified, Klein’s past affiliation with the Department of Social Services and her familiarity with the area is what put her over the top, Mathers said.

“This is a key position in Moffat County and I think we did everything we could to make sure the stakeholders were involved in the process,” Gray said Tuesday after the vote. “I think the hiring committee, which included the two incoming commissioners, made the right decision.”
