Obituary: Phyllis Jean Allen
July 24, 1926 — Sept. 9, 2018
Phyllis was born in Osborne, Kansas, to her parents, Roy Stehley and Florence (Koch) Stehley. She and her older sister, Pat (Stehley) Wanek, grew up in many locations throughout Kansas as they moved numerous times. She graduated high school in 1944 as valedictorian of her Wilson, Kansas, class.
Shortly after high school graduation, she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. In 1947, she came out to Steamboat Springs to work at the Routt County National Bank. She lived with her Uncle Jack and Aunt Pearl Stehley and her cousin, Carol Sue Stehley.
On July 15, 1949, she married William L. Allen, eldest son of George and Faye (Tuttle) Allen, who lived just down the street from the Stehleys.
Phyllis was active in the community and a member of PEO, Beta Sigma Phi, Ladies Recreational Club and the United Methodist Church.
She was known throughout the community as a dedicated mother and homemaker with a caring, kind-hearted and generous spirit. Phyllis enjoyed horseback riding, socializing with friends and family, playing bridge, knitting, and writing poetry, and she had a huge affection for animals. She maintained a wonderful, supportive, and kind sense of humor and a quick wit.
Bill and Phyllis were owners of Allen’s Clothing Store, which was opened by George and Bill Allen in 1949 and sold to Tod and Robin Allen in 1984.
Phyllis is survived by her sons Lon (Eileen) Allen and Tod (Robin) Allen and daughter Gina (Mark) Walker.
Her grandchildren are Anya (Josh) Bryant, Scott Allen, Thomas Allen, Kris Allen, Jenny Allen, Mariah Walker, and Trace Walker. Her great-grandson is John Crosby Bryant.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Allen, her grandsons, Michael and Bradley Allen, and her sister, Pat Wanek.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday Sept. 14 at the United Methodist Church, where she was a member for more than 70 years.
