December 2, 1922 – February 18, 2019

Lifetime Craig resident Jean Tucker died peacefully at her home in Craig, on Monday, February 18, 2019.  She was 96 years old. A celebration of Jean’s life was held at The Journey At First Baptist Church, in Craig, Colorado, March 11.

Jean McCandless was born at the home of her parents, L. S. “Ted” and Jane Grant McCandless.   She spent an idyllic childhood growing up in Craig and attending the local schools. Following high school graduation, Jean attended Colorado State University and later Barnes Business School in Denver.

On October 22, 1944, Jean married her high school sweetheart, Lee Tucker, in Craig.  To this union, three children were born.  Jean and Lee celebrated 71+ years of marriage before Lee’s passing, May 15, 2015.

When she was young, Jean loved tending her flower gardens; sewing clothes for her daughters; knitting for her family; playing golf, bridge and gin; fly fishing; and sledding with her children and grandchildren.  She was a devoted wife and fun-loving mother and grandmother.

Jean and her brother Neil later owned and operated the Marj Marr Shop, an exclusive women’s clothing store.  When she wasn’t enjoying work there, she loved to write.  In 1989, Jean published some of her favorite poems in a book titled Just Jean.  She enjoyed selling her book at craft fairs and giving copies to her family and many friends.

Jean was a member of the local P.E.O. Sisterhood for 73 years, and was the member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Craig for 80+ years.

Jean is survived by her children and their spouses:  Jane and (Greg) Hamilton, Ann and (Darrel) Irvin, Blaine and (Tamra) Tucker; her brother, Neil and (Jill) McCandless. Jean is survived by seven grandchildren:  Brian and (Deanne) Hamilton, Eric and (Keri) Hamilton, Ann Marie Roberts, (Kregg Schwindt), Amy and (James) Pankonin Chamberlin, Aaron and (Dilcia) Pankonin, Luke and (Michelle) Tucker, and Adam and (Elizabeth) Tucker; and fourteen great-grandchildren:  Tyler, Tucker and Zane Hamilton; Matthew, Alex Marie and Halle Hamilton; Mason and Carter Pankonin Chamberlin; Emelia and Mena Tucker; Wyatt and Will Tucker; Zeke Roberts; and Leonardo Pankonin.

Jean was preceded in death by her brother, L. G. “Bud” McCandless and his wife Virginia Marr, her parents, and her husband, Lee.  She will be greatly missed by her family and many close friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made in Jean’s memory to a charity of your choice.
