Nurse writes about giving thanks in Belize

To the Editor:

Yesterday was American Thanksgiving and I celebrated the day with my American friends. Although it was nice, I couldn’t help but think about the recent events involving the PG police.

Recently two girls, ages 13 and 14, were raped and sodomized (with police rifles) by the police here. The girls were told that the officers wouldn’t be charged with anything because “THEY ARE THE POLICE” and if the girls said anything, the police would kill them. This is the same police force that threatened me.

However, the national news media were apprised of the situation and suddenly the chief of police wants to investigate! I had been counseling one of the girls, so I feel close to this case.

Right now, all three of the officers are still working … and the girls are being questioned. The girls have both been accused of prostitution, but I know they are both trying to earn money to support their families.

Filipa (age 13) wants to go to high school, but doesn’t have the money. I am hoping to get enough funds from each of you ($10-$20) so that she can start school in January. If she does well for a year, I would like for her to live with me for the next two to three years and finish her education.

If any of you are willing to invest in a lovely, intelligent young Maya woman, please deposit the funds in my account in Craig at Community First National Bank, account 4222110088. Please e-mail me if you make a deposit so I can have Filipa acknowledge it.

Thank you so much!
