Cindy Vorhies counted under her breath as she tallied up the new teachers.

Her final count revealed that Moffat County School District will have more new teachers than average this year.

“It’s close, but a little bit higher,” said Vorhies, school district personnel assistant.

An additional 27 teachers will take the wheel at various positions across the School District. In comparison, the district has averaged about 15 new teachers on average every year for the past five years, she said.

Some new teachers come from far afield, including New York and Wisconsin. However, a new teacher doesn’t always mean a new face.

“A few of those are going to be teachers that are coming from other positions in the district,” Vorhies said.

In one such case, she added, a special education paraprofessional will be moving into a full-time teaching position.

Not all new additions are full-time employees, either. This year, the school district hired a part-time occupational therapist and a psychologist who will work one day per week.

This week, new teachers got their first introduction to Moffat County schools. Orientations for new teachers began Monday and are scheduled to continue today.

In the past, student population growth has prompted the school district to hire more teachers. Last year, East Elementary School hired one extra teacher each for kindergarten and first-grade classes, bumping those grades from three tracks to four.

During the summer, school district administrators hired teachers to accommodate a growing student population at East, Vorhies said previously.

This year, East Elementary plans to add a fourth section to its second-grade class to accommodate last year’s first-grade group.

If enrollment this year exceeds capacity, the School District will need to hire more teachers. However, it’s not clear yet whether that step will be necessary, Vorhies said, adding that she doesn’t yet know how many students each school has enrolled.
