New girls basketball coach shooting to build Moffat County dynasty

The Moffat County High School girls varsity basketball team has been known to be a threat during the regular season and beyond, and even with a new roster and new coaching, the lady hoopsters plan to take it as far as they can this season.

In his first year heading up the Moffat County program girls program is Sam McLeod, who first began as a teacher at the school last year. McLeod first began coaching in Springfield in 2001, and he was the head coach in Oak Creek from 2005 to 2012.

McLeod said the focus early in the season has been getting the girls "on the same page."

"When you have a transition with the coaching staff, you're looking at changing almost everything they thought they knew," he said. "It's going to take a little while to get continuity.

With a minimal amount of players with experience starting games, it's a whole new look for the team this year.

"They're new to playing together, I'm new to them, I have different expectations, but that's always the case," McLeod said. "Understanding how we're going to play is the biggest thing."

Three seniors make up varsity — Hannah Beckett, Shayna Allen and Katelyn Peroulis, the latter of whom is recovering from a summertime knee injury and likely won't see any playing time until January at the earliest.

"We're a very young team, predominantly juniors and sophomores," the coach said. "Katelyn is still one of our leaders, that's for sure."

Each member of the squad brings some unique skills, whether it's speed, shooting expertise or propensity for steals.

Junior Morgan Lawton recorded 10 takeaways during the Bulldogs' win against Orem, Utah, and 11 rebounds against Union in the same tournament in Vernal, Utah. She was second only to fellow junior Leah Camilletti in points, with Camilletti netting 41 across the weekend event.

"I think we're working a lot better together this year already than we did last year, and we're conducively coming together better," Lawton said. "We read each other well."

Camilletti agreed about the team's ability to mesh.

"We're still getting used to each other, but we're getting it," she said.

Camilletti added that the plays on offense McLeod has had them running are largely the same as before only with a greater amount of options.

"He pushes a lot harder than we've been used to, which is a good thing," Lawton said.

Last season, the girls repeated as the district champions of the 3A Western Slope League and reached the Sweet 16 round of the state playoffs.

One goal is to get even further, but McLeod wants to start things with a clean slate instead of using previous seasons as a measuring stick.

"We don't have to come in with expectations based on the past," McLeod said. "We're rewriting what we want to be, and we've got the experience and the talent to be special. We want to take that next step. It's about building a dynasty, instead of just being good, being great."
