New face joins community college
Derek Mogensen is joining Colorado Northwestern Community College-Craig staff as a college recruiter and outdoor recreation program teacher.
Mogensen is a CNCC graduate in general studies, which led him to continue his education at Colorado State University and obtain a bachelor’s degree in natural resources with an emphasis in recreation and tourism. He took over CNCC’s outdoor recreation program in 2001. He spent the past four years on the Rangely campus as coordinator for outdoor recreation program, three years as a college recruiter, and was the director of the Nichols and Ross residence halls this past year.
Mogensen recently moved to Craig with his wife, Drea, so she can pursue her nursing degree at the Craig campus. As soon as this semester’s schedule for fairs and recruiting trips on the road subside, he plans to develop a schedule of day trips near Craig.
Mogensen said he wants to build awareness of all the outdoor recreation trips available.
“Everyone is welcome to sign up for any of the college trips in the current schedule,” he said.
Although most of the trips now originate in Rangely, he will work out transportation arrangements for interested parties.
Mogensen has led spelunking at Spring Cave and float trips on the Colorado River through Ruby Horse Thief Canyon near Loma.
