My Life Words: Alayna kline — Laying out the welcome mat

Alayna Kline, a supervisor at the Holiday Inn of Craig, has been working for the hotel chain for more than five years. She said she enjoys meeting and visiting with guests who come to the hotel from various places around the country, sometimes the globe.

“I’ve been working at Holiday Inn for more than five years now. My five-year anniversary was actually the 22nd of October, so just a couple weeks ago. I just got promoted to supervisor last month, and I had been doing the night audit position, which is 11 (p.m.) to 7 (a.m.), and I’d been doing that since July of 2006. Now I’m switching to doing days again, and it’s really crazy trying to get back into the day shift after working nights for so long.

“Our front desk manager, David (Bradshaw), is actually the coach for the varsity basketball boys team, and in a couple weeks, he’ll be away for things like away games. While he’s gone, I’ll be the one in charge, basically. He’ll do the scheduling, but when there’s a manager’s position to be done, I’ll be the one who does it.

“Our busy season will be starting up, the third hunting season, so it’s going to be getting pretty crazy here. We have a lot of yearly regulars who come here every single year for the past 20 years. I’ve gotten to meet a lot of amazing people, like there’s this group, the Seenos, who come every year. They spend thousands of dollars in the bar. They’re really, really cool people, they bring us T-shirts and foods, all kinds of stuff.



“We also have weekly regulars, like people who live in Denver and have to deliver here every week. Like this U.S. Foods driver, Mark Hens, is one of my favorite people ever. He usually checks out at 4 or 5 in the morning and he’ll just stand there for half an hour and talk to me. He’s a really, really nice guy.

“I don’t really do a lot (outside of work). I used to do Young Life and I used to be involved in my church. I just recently quit The Galaxy when I got the supervisor job. I had been working there from 5 to 9 in the evenings three to four days a week doing deliveries. I know the streets here so well because I’ve lived here my whole life.

“I love to be able to meet people from all over. We have a group that comes in called Nautilus. They’re based out of Fort Worth, Texas, but most of their people are from England and Scotland, and it’s just really cool to be able to talk to them and hear their accents. You just get to see so many people come through, and it’s funny because my family is so well known, and people will tell me, ‘Oh, I know your dad, I know your grandpa.’ I can never quite get used to the fact that so many people know me and I have no idea who they are.

“The biggest downside of working nights was that I didn’t have time for the social life that I wanted. I didn’t have time during the day because all I did was sleep. That was really difficult. Recently, I got to get that back, but when you’re the supervisor, you have to be the bad guy even if you don’t want to. Recently, we just got our new logos and everything and we’ve really been struggling to make sure we got every single detail that we needed to. That was a 14-month process trying to get everything done. Our official relaunch date was Oct. 1, but we still have things that aren’t finished yet, but it really varies on brand standards and you have to make sure you meet those.

“I absolutely love my job, and I’m so glad to work with the people here. I’ve lasted through four general managers, three controllers, six front desk managers, four catering managers. Our turnover here is ridiculous. For someone to stay in the front office for so long is so rare.”
