Mosquito spraying over city to begin June 23

Pat Callahan

Moffat County Pest Management will be conducting aerial mosquito spraying over the city and surrounding areas June 23 through June 26.

The applications will take place during early morning and evening hours, depending on the weather.

Bruce Johnson, pest management supervisor with the Moffat County Cooperative Extension, said “ultra low” volumes of the insecticide malathion will be used in the applications.

Malathion is an organophosphate insecticide, which acts as an inhibitor of the enzyme cholinesterase, in both insects and humans.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), cholinesterase inhibition in humans can over stimulate the nervous system causing nausea, dizziness, confusion and, at very high exposures, respiratory paralysis and death.

The EPA maintains that residential and dietary malathion risks from public health mosquito control are low.

Johnson said the spraying is done annually, and that malathion has been used locally for the past 15 years.

Johnson also said that the applications will have no effect on people and will not pose a threat to houses or car paint.

However, Johnson did say that malathion has a displeasing odor.

Mountain Air Spray Company will conduct the spraying.

Moffat County Pest Management recommends avoiding direct contact with the spray.
