Andy Bockelman

Where is your hometown? “I was born and raised right here.”

What has kept you in Craig? “I’m a small-town kind of guy. I tried living in big towns and didn’t like it. I moved to (Grand) Junction, I lived in Minneapolis for a while and other small towns up there. For the most part, I’ve been here for 28 years.”

How did you first get involved in your job? “I took auto tech in high school, and it interested me right from the start. I did a little turning of wrenches for front-end work, I changed some tires here and there, but I landed in parts. With parts we dabble in a little bit of everything — engine stuff, big truck stuff, all of it.”

Favorite part of your job? “The fact that I’m inside is pretty good during the wintertime. I like talking to people about their cars. Every day, somebody comes in with something you haven’t heard of, like some problem, and it’s just nice to know that we have places like this that you can go to and actually get help.”

What would be your fantasy job? “Video game tester. I would love doing that and getting paid for it. I like all the games they have out, first-person shooters, RPGs, racers, fighting games, a little bit of everything. I have a PlayStation and an Xbox, and I have more games for the 360, but I do have both. I’ve got a stack of games like this high (raises hand to chest level). I like playing online with my buddies. A lot of them don’t live here anymore and it’s a good way to keep in touch.”

If your life were like a movie, what would you want it to be? “If I had to pick, I’d have to go out there and say ‘The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.’ I’ve traveled and bounced around, so it kind of goes along with my life already.”

Favorite meal from a local restaurant? “I’m a fan of Carelli’s, so I’d say the Carelli’s style stromboli.”

Favorite spot in Moffat County? “I love the mountains, and that’s part of why I’ve stayed here this long. I like hiking at Bears Ears, Black Mountain, Freeman, the Great Divide. We’ve got a little bit of everything here.”

Most embarrassing moment? “Could we rephrase that to ‘wish you had finished?’ I’d say dropping out of high school. I really wish I’d toughed it out and finished.”

Proudest accomplishment? “Making it to 30, paying off my first vehicle, and hanging onto the job in this bad economy.”
