With one day of the Colorado 3A Region 1 wrestling meet finished, most Moffat County wrestlers have put themselves in good position to advance to the state meet.

With more strong wrestling today, several Bulldogs will have a great opportunity to qualify in the top four and move on. But day two at the regional will take wrestlers deeper into the bracket, pitting them against tougher opponents.

Freshman Garrett Uptain will have a tough road to qualify. After a bye, he was pinned in his first match by Cedaredge’s Austin Todd. While the 106-lb class is small in Region 1, it features some of the top wrestlers in the state. Uptain will await another wrestler in the consolation ladder today.

At 113-lbs, Ashlee Griffiths had a bye in the first round and beat Wyatt Toothaker with a pin in the second round. She will go up against Garrett Toothaker of Hotchkiss, the second-seed in the region, in the semifinals today.

Issic Herod scored a pin in his only match Friday and will face Basalt’s Hector Chagoya in the semifinals today at 120-lbs. At 132-lbs, Shandon Hadley was pinned in his first match, but recovered and got a pin of his own. He will wrestle Gunnison’s Colten Diderickson in the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket.

Brayden Peterson moved cleanly into the 138-lb semifinal with a bye and a quick pin of Middle Park’s Hugh Campbell. He will take on the top seed in the weight, Salida’s Brandon Coleman.

Senior Garrett Stewart lost a 9-8 decision to Malik Johnson of Buena Vista, and will start today in the quarterfinals of the consolation ladder. Fellow senior Jacob Teeter will also start the day on the consolation bracket after getting a pin and being pinned Friday.

Three Bulldogs suffered losses going against the top-seed in their respective brackets. After a bye, Curtis Dunlap (160-lbs), Brady Springer (170) and Cory Summers (220) all had to go against the best from the region and lost. Each will start the day in the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket.

Jesse Demoor got a pin late in the third round against Alejandro Alejandre of Cedaredge and is into the semifinals at 182-lbs. He will take on Middle Park’s Cody Garrett, who did not wrestle Friday.

After the day’s wrestling, Moffat County sat in fifth place with 49 points, but they were just seven points behind Hotchkiss, which sat in second with 56. The region continues today at Grand Valley High School in Parachute.
