Moffat County wrestlers ranked highly heading into regionals

Craig Daily Press Staff Report

Moffat County High School's Hugo Hernandez grapples with Rifle's Jake Henderson during a dual meet at MCHS. Hernandez, Stelios Peroulis, Issik Herod, Mikinzie Klimper, Brett Loyd and Chris Moschetti are among the Bulldogs who rank in the top three of their respective weight classes going into competition at the 3A Region 4 Tournament this weekend in Montrose.

Moffat County High School wrestlers are ready and raring to go this weekend for what may be the final competition of the year for some and the stepping-stone to state for others.

The 3A Region 4 Tournament takes place Friday and Saturday in Montrose, with the Bulldogs among 14 teams that will attend, including Basalt, Bayfield, Coal Ridge, Delta, Eagle Valley, Grand Valley, Gunnison, Montezuma-Cortez, Olathe, Pagosa Springs, Rifle, Sheridan and Steamboat Springs.

Rankings from On the Mat place Olathe the top overall team in the region, fourth in all 3A schools statewide, followed by Delta — seventh in 3A — and Sheridan — eighth. MCHS fields a nearly full roster, with 13 grapplers expected to compete, filling all but the 160-pound slot.

Several Bulldogs rank highly in the region, with senior Stelios Peroulis at the top of the list for 220-pound competition in Region 4, boasting a 30-3 season record on Trackwrestling.com, ranked second overall in the weight class among the state's 3A division.

Like Peroulis, sophomore Mikinzie Klimper, 30-10, hopes to return to state, ranked second in Region 4 and fourth overall in 170. Despite getting a late start to the season, senior Brett Loyd climbed up the rankings quickly with nine wins to five losses and looks to round out his high school career at the Pepsi Center, currently ninth in the state and second only to Olathe's Chayden Harris in the region.

Senior Issik Herod claimed a regional championship last season and is eyeing a repeat, standing 31-7 in 132, second in Region 4 and 10th in the state, while in the 182 class, junior Hugo Hernandez — 28-10, eighth in state and third in the region — seeks to avenge a loss to Rifle's Jake Henderson — sixth in state, second in region — to secure his own spot at state.
