MCHS basketball, wrestling, girls swimming and cheer teams were the center of attention during a ceremony to cap off the winter sports year, as was the Craig Youth Hockey Association Midget team, consisting primarily of MCHS students.
“They showed a lot of heart this year,” said hockey coach Randy Armstrong, adding that his team played through a great deal of adversity, with injuries having an effect on the roster.
Cheer coach Brittany Nielson spiced up her awards beyond the regular varsity letters with candy-themed honors such as Jolly Rancher, for always bringing a smile to teammates, and Lifesaver, for always being there, as well as the Most Valuable Cheerleader award, which went to Laura Bolton.
Girls swimming coach Jeff Wert noted that he was proud to be able to give out letters to the majority of his group in his first year, as well as a few academic acknowledgements for students who excelled in grades in addition to the pool.
Wrestling coach Tanner Linsacum took the podium to recap his season, which included sending three of his grapplers to state, Issik Herod, Mikinzie Klimper and Stelios Peroulis.
The wrestling program will have its own awards night April 9, though Linsacum mentioned in his speech for all present that he was proud of the turnout seen at meets, with families supporting kids on the road or at home.
“We were by far the most well-represented team,” he said of the away events.
Boys and girls basketball had perhaps the most awards of all to hand out that night, with every member of the varsity teams lettering thanks to both attending regional playoff rounds, and, for the girls, the final leg of the state tournament.
Athletic Director Mike Mitchell introduced boys coach Eric Hamilton as the Western Slope League Coach of the Year, a title he retains from the previous season.
“It’s a tribute to the coaching staff and players who play the game right,” he said before leading into his awards for players and a long list of community members who helped make the season possible.
Among the honors received were within the team — such as the Bulldog with the top rebounds, points, assists or steals — as well as an All-Conference Honorable Mention for Denton Taylor and First Team nods for Matt Hamilton, Tyler Davis, Dylan Kincade and Joe Camilletti, who also took home the accolades of Academic All-State First Team and a plaque for exceeding 1,000 points across four years of hoops.
The Camilletti name also came up as the girls stood for their awards, Leah Camilletti the recipient of the WSL Player of the Year among many other distinctions, such as All-Conference First Team, also given to Morgan Lawton, Kayla Pinnt and Josey King.
Katelyn Peroulis, Katia Voloshin and Mattie Jo Duzik took All-Conference Honorable Mention.
Coach Sam McLeod also presented seniors Katelyn Peroulis, Shayna Allen, Hannah Beckett and manager Chandra Warren with balls signed by the team to signify their last year of high school athletics.
Mitchell mentioned it was “a travesty” McLeod did not also receive Coach of the Year, though McLeod said he was more concerned with giving credit to the players.
“I’ve never been as proud in my life,” he said of the season. “My heart could not be more full.”
