The Moffat County volleyball team ended its regular season with two matches in Craig Saturday.

After a three-set win over Rifle earlier in the week, the Bulldogs played two of the better teams in the Western Slope League at home.

The result was losses to Olathe and Gunnison, but Moffat County will have one last shot to make a push for the playoffs.

The Bulldogs (5-14), fell to Olathe (13-6) 12-25, 13-25, 25-20, 14-25 in the first match of the day, before falling to Gunnison (16-3), which finished undefeated in the WSL, in straight sets.

“I think Olathe was beatable, but obviously we didn’t,” head coach Sandy Camilletti said. “But Gunnison, they were tough.”

Now the regular season is finished, and Moffat County’s final record does not look great, but the Bulldogs pushed aside a slow start and went 4-5 in WSL play, good for fifth place in the league. It was a top-heavy year in 3A, with four teams (Olathe, Coal Ridge, Roaring Fork and Gunnison) finishing far ahead of the pack.

Now the Bulldogs will play in the WSL tournament this weekend at Grand Junction Central High School. Nine WSL teams will be there with four games guaranteed.

At 5-14, Moffat County is a long shot to make the playoffs, but Camilletti thinks the team could be in the conversation if it wins three games this weekend.

“If we get three of four, we could possibly squeak into regionals,” she said. “Had we beat Olathe Saturday that would have been huge. Unfortunately we didn’t. But there’s a whole selection committee this year, so who knows.”

Similar to boys soccer, the volleyball tournament will have automatic qualifiers and wildcard selections. The wildcards are determined by a committee based on several factors, which means a couple nice wins this weekend might turn some heads.

The tournament this weekend will consist of two games Friday and two Saturday. Moffat County will play Roaring Fork and Rifle Friday, and then its Saturday opponents will be determined by Friday’s results.

Despite the Bulldogs’ middling seed in the tournament, Camilletti feels good about her team’s chances this weekend because of their improvement this season.

“Especially lately, we have really improve our hitting,” she said. “At the beginning of the season I wouldn’t say we were putting balls down as well as we are now. Now they’re hitting better and blocking better. Against Olathe we had one set that was excellent with blocking.”

Getting consistency has also been key for Moffat County.

“They’ve come a long way and we’ve found a more consistent lineup,” Camilletti said. “I hope it doesn’t come back to haunt us, because I think we were capable of winning some of those games (early in the season). We had people playing in different positions and next to teammates they hadn’t seen much of. Now we have our lineup.”
