Moffat County United Way offers free tax preparation for locals in need
Moffat County United Way plans to host two days of in-person tax filing assistance next month for income eligible residents, as well as additional virtual assistance.
The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance site will be available for qualifying residents of Craig and Moffat County from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Feb 6-7 at 552 Breeze St. in Craig.
“We are proud to offer the VITA tax preparation site again this year. This is an important resource we strive to provide our community with every year,” said Heather Fross, executive director of Moffat County United Way.
Taxpayers interested in utilizing this service can contact Moffat County United Way to schedule an appointment. The in-person meetings take about 45 minutes to complete. An electronic option will also be available in February, March and April.
Volunteer Income Tax Assistance is an IRS-sponsored program operated by trained volunteers to provide free, confidential, and secure preparation and e-filing of federal and state income taxes to taxpayers who generally make less than $60,000 per year.
“This service ensures that people who have a disability, have lower incomes, or are elderly receive income tax preparation at no cost, which is important due to their limited income,” Fross said in a Monday statement.
The service is available for basic returns, people with disabilities and the elderly. Residents interested in participating in Volunteer Income Tax Assistance will need to bring the following information to the appointment:
- Proof of identification for self, spouse, and household members who are dependents
- Social security cards for any household members included on the tax return
- Birth dates for household members
- Wage and earning statements (W-2, W2G, 1099-R, 1099-MISC) from all employers
- Interest and dividend statements from banks
- Health insurance statements
- A copy of last year’s federal and state return if available
- Bank account routing and account numbers for direct deposit
- Total amount paid for daycare provider with the provider’s Employer Identification Number
Taxpayers who do not qualify for Volunteer Income Tax Assistance services and make less than $73,000 can prepare their own taxes online for free at UnitedWay.org/MyFreeTaxes.
