Moffat County track puts forth best effort in Grand Junction

Bulldogs lead 3A state rankings in four events

Craig Daily Press Staff Report

Moffat County High School's Madysen Cramer focuses only on the finish line as the Hotchkiss Bulldog Invitational is hit by snow. MCHS track and field most recently competed at the Mickey Dunn Invitational in Grand Junction, where numerous Moffat County athletes hit new goals, some posting the best results in several seasons.

The number of participants was smaller Saturday than any varsity meet Moffat County High School track and field teams have had this year, but the numbers spoke for themselves at the Mickey Dunn Invitational.

A smaller Bulldog turnout for the Grand Junction event — not originally on the schedule — had MCHS girls placing seventh and boys ninth overall, but athletes let loose their competitive spirit with no less than 30 season bests.

Kayla Pinnt won both the 100- and 200-meter dash with times that were her best for the year so far but ways away from the school record she holds for each. Both clock-ins keep her secured at the top of Colorado's 3A girls rankings.

Though the girls didn't compete in any relays during the weekend, Moffat County is also the top 3A team for the 4×100.

Also leading the 3A state rankings after the Mickey Dunn is the boys 4×800 team of Riley Allen, Carter Severson, Diego Quezada and Connor Scranton, who placed second behind 4A Durango and had the best Moffat County time in the two-mile relay since 2012.

Selena Hernandez came ever closer to overtaking the all-time Bulldog best in the 100 hurdles, setting a new mark for herself in the race and placing third with the best time the school has seen in the past decade.

Shandon Hadley and Eddie Smercina each came close to their personal bests set last season, Hadley in the 100 and 200 dash and Smercina in the 400 dash, placing sixth, third and ninth, respectively. The two also joined Victor Silva and Kaden Hafey in setting a new season low in the boys 4×100, which placed fifth in Junction.

Madysen Cramer and Allie Dilldine each jockeyed for the lead in the girls 800 and 1,600 runs, while the boys long-distance runners shaved off considerable time as Carter Severson set the new time to beat in the 800, Riley Allen in the 1,600 — the best time for the team since 2012 — and Brandon Beason in the 3,200.

In field events, Ary Shaffer — who also took third in the 400 dash — placed fourth in the girls long jump, while Morgan Lawton and Keenan Hildebrandt each took third in the girls discus and boys shot put, respectively.

Lawton and Hildebrandt each outdid themselves, setting new personal records in the throwing events and hitting the best distances in girls discus since 2010 and best in boys shot put since 2012.

MCHS athletes have the option of competing in Palisade's Frank Woodburn Invitational this weekend or waiting until the regular schedule begins again next week after spring break, with a JV meet hosted by Fruita Monument and a varsity event in Glenwood Springs.
