Bulldog swimmers placed fifth at the Montrose Invitational, finding good results despite a diminished roster. It was all Craig athletes fielding the team, as Steamboat Springs’ Sean Portman and Brooks Birkinbine were unable to attend, requiring some adjustments.

For Jesse Kurz and Jacob Briggs, sticking to their specialties paid off, Kurz hitting a season best in the 50-yard freestyle and Briggs diving right in for the 50 backstroke, each taking second in the races.

Kurz is less than one second away from a qualifying time that will send him back to state, while Briggs is working toward the same in the 100 back, the only version of the particular stroke that takes place in the championships, ninth at Montrose.

In other non-qualifier events, Kurz also placed sixth in the 50 butterfly and seventh in 100 individual medley, Briggs 10th in 200 back.

Wes Atkin came in sixth in the 50 breaststroke, while Devin McIntosh edged out his teammate in the 100 breast.

McIntosh and Atkin also took on the duty of relays with their teammates — the first time this season for McIntosh — the foursome getting sixth in the 200 medley and ninth in both the 200 free and 400 free, the only time MCHS has competed in the longer race this year.

Boys swimming heads to the Front Range this weekend for the Jeffco Invitational in Arvada, leading up to the Western Slope Conference Championship Meet in early May.
