Moffat County shotgun teams have a blast at state

Craig Daily Press Staff Report

A huge competition triggered some good outcomes for Moffat County kids this past week.

The 4-H shotgun shooting teams ended their season at the final round of the state fair with rounds in Colorado Springs over Labor Day weekend.

With hundreds of young shooters setting their sights on winning, the boys of Northwest Colorado did impressive, said coach Wade Gerber.

“You have about 600 kids shooting for that long and you look around and see some perfect scores, it can be stressful, but they did really well overall,” he said.

The contest was especially tough in the trap category, where the senior division had seven shooters achieve an enviable score of 50, requiring a tiebreaker. Though technically listed 16th on the score sheet by the end of the weekend, Bryce Tuttle was among nine teens who only missed one target during two rounds and were tied for what would have otherwise been second place.

“That’s the first time we’ve ever had a senior in the final shoot-out,” Wade noted.

Likewise, in the juniors, Trevor Hume took third with a score of 48, coming out ahead of three other shooters with the same result, the only two ahead of him both taking a 49.

The senior team that also included Brayden Tuttle, Kearn Gerber, Toryn Hume, Carlin King and Colton Hinkemeyer had the best group result in the trap event, placing ninth, whereas the juniors — also featuring Kameron Baker, Donovan Converse, Torin Gray and Laadan Rothermund — fared best in skeet, finishing sixth.

Every year is a learning experience, Wade said.

“We definitely moved up in out state standings,” he said. “We had many compliments on how well our kids presented themselves and how they maintained gun safety, so to be around that many contestants and be pointed out for that was pretty neat.”
