While many were kicking back Labor Day weekend, the transition from summer saw young gun enthusiasts from Moffat County hard at work proving their merit.

Northwest Colorado was well represented in the 2014 4-H State Shooting Sports Contest in August and September in Colorado Springs, testing their abilities with rifles, shotguns and archery equipment.

Among those with the best results were the duo of Dylan Villa and Hunter Rummel, each qualifying for the national levels next summer in the air rifle event. Both also performed well with the .22 rifle, though only Rummel can go to nationals for that, as Villa previously went for the category earlier this year.

This is the third year Villa has qualified for nationals, and he intends to make this one count.

“It was great to be able to hit my marks in my last year,” he said. “I really think I can win at nationals.”

Wielding a bow and arrow, fellow visitor to the national event Travis Walsh led the Moffat County archers, finishing in third in the compound bow event, though due to both age limits and previous participation, he won’t be going to the big game.

However, teammate Jordan Kainz also made the cut, as did Cutter Polly as an alternate for the senior division.

The junior division shooters also performed strongly but will have to wait until they’re older to be considered for the national event.

Placing as highly as sixth in the shotgun categories, Carlin King said he enjoyed each of the three competitions, but one was more exhilarating.

“I like the clays the best because it’s more like hunting,” he said. “You’re shooting at different places instead of just the same spot.”

The following is a list of Moffat County competitors in the 2014 4-H State Shooting Sports Contest in Colorado Springs.
