The Tiger Invitational on Friday and Saturday in Grand Junction was the final tune up for the Moffat County High School track and field team before this weekend's 4A Western Slope League meet.

The WSL meet could be the last time some of the Bulldogs get to run this year, unless they qualify for the 4A state meet.

Senior Maddy Jourgensen took advantage of the highly competitive Tiger Invitational by doing her best to secure a spot at the state meet.

Jourgensen took third in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 5 minutes, 19.85 seconds — an almost 6-second improvement over her previous best.

She also finished the 3,200-meter run in 11 minutes, 51.07 seconds, good for second place.

Jourgensen's time in the 1,600-meter run moved her from outside the top 10 and into sixth place for the event in the 4A state meet's rankings.

"The Tiger Invitational is always a good, competitive meet," she said. "When you run against tough competition, they always seem to make you run harder."

Although she is sitting comfortably in the 1,600-meter run, Jourgensen said she wants to improve her time in the 3,200-meter run, where she is currently ranked 11th.

"I want to lower my (3,200-meter run) time quite a bit," she said. "I was sick when I ran the event this past weekend, so I didn't push myself as hard."

Jourgensen's performances contributed to a seventh-place finish for the girls team out of 16 teams. The boys team took sixth place out of 20 teams.

Head coach Todd Trapp said Jourgensen has worked hard despite some obstacles this year.

"Maddy is a driven person," he said. "She was sick Friday, but bounced back Saturday and had the best race of her season in the (1,600-meter run)."

Fellow senior Lauren Roberts placed in all three jumping events — second in long jump, third in high jump and fourth in triple jump — as well as seventh in the 200-meter dash.

Roberts' mark in long jump, 16 feet, 10.75 inches, moved her into ninth place in the long jump state rankings.

Roberts was already ranked 13th in high jump and is less than an inch off qualifying for triple jump.

"Lauren has been working on her approach in long jump and is finally getting some consistency down," he said. "She had a lot of scratches early in the season, but she has put it all together in time for the end of the season."

The boys team received points from three of their four relays, placing in the 4-by-200-meter relay, 4-by-400-meter relay and 4-by-800-meter relay.

Junior Alfredo Lebron ran the 1,600-meter run in 4 minutes, 24 seconds — a season personal best — on his way to a second place finish. Lebron also took third in the 3,200-meter run.

The top 16 times or marks in each event qualify for the state meet May 19 to 21 in Denver.

Trapp said no matter the event, this is the time of year athletes should be recording the best times and marks.

"Everyone is supposed to drop time throughout the year with the goal of having their best races and times right now," he said. "They have all worked hard and everyone has a chance to qualify for state."

Jourgensen took fourth place in both the 1,600-meter and the 3,200-meter runs in last season's state meet.

Her goal this year is to outdo last season, she said.

"I want to improve on my times and places as much as possible this year," she said. "I am a senior, so it is really important for me to go out strong."
