As the Colorado high school rodeo season gets back into action, one can bet athletes from Northwest Colorado will be at the forefront.

Riders and ropers jumped back into it in Lamar this past weekend, finding success and adding to the season tallies that could send them to the national level.

Moffat County High School’s Garrett Uptain is nearly uncatchable in the saddle bronc riding event, winning both days in Lamar and staying well in front in the season standings in the contest with 20 points on the weekend contributing to a total 90 accumulated starting in the fall.

While she struggled in the event recently, Kinlie Brennise remains ranked first in the state for breakaway roping. She took second-place and fourth-place honors in Lamar in pole bending and goat tying, staying in the top four rankings of each at fourth and second, respectively.

Though, it was Dusty Taylor who got a first day win in tie down roping, Trent Vernon, whose best weekend result was third, remains the frontrunner in the event for the long haul, the top 10 full of Northwest Colorado names, including Taylor in second, Kasen Brennise in fourth, Yampa’s Eric Logan in fifth, Cutter Barnes, seventh and Jace Logan, 10th.

In team roping, Eric Logan and Yancey Weber wrapped up the weekend with a victory, and while the duo of Barnes and Taylor didn’t have a great run, they keep the second-highest points in the event.

In steer wrestling, Eric Logan won day two, now topping the rankings, followed by his brother, Jace, and Barnes in third.

In all-around points for high school, Eric Logan sits second in the state for boys and Kinlie Brennise third for girls.

Lamar’s junior high event also saw Northwest Colorado kids, including Craig’s John Harding and Eric and Jace’s younger brother, Kody Logan, who each saw their best results in the boys breakaway, placing sixth and seventh on the first day — as well as ninth and seventh in goat tying and no times in chute dogging — and making their way onto the season board.

Teams will next compete in Golden on Saturday and Sunday for a rodeo hosted by Lakewood High School.
