Moffat County Partners seeks AmeriCorps member

Josh Nichols

AmeriCorps, a national program whose mission is to provide people to help non-profit organizations, is offering funding for an AmeriCorps member to one of its affiliates, Moffat County Partners in Craig.

And Craig residents are eligible to fill the position.

“AmeriCorps is like the Peace Corps in the United States,” said AmeriCorps Program Director Jessica Summers. “People volunteer for a year of service and they work for a non-profit agency for one year.”

Tara Jenrich, executive director of Moffat County Partners, said she encourages local residents to call her office and apply.

“The person is responsible for the recruitment of new partners and educating the community about our program,” she said.

Benefits of volunteering include:

  • A $9,600 living allowance.
  • Health insurance.
  • Child-care benefits.
  • An education award of $4,725.

The term of service stipulates that a person put in 1,700 hours of work before Sept. 30, 2003.

While the main focus of the job will be recruitment of volunteers, Summers said the AmeriCorps member may also help with direct service, such as tutoring or youth activities involvement.

Having a person on board to concentrate on recruitment will help the program, Jenrich said.

“We’re still a fairly new program,” she said. “It will be really great for us to have someone concentrating on the community outreach.”

The goal is to have 100 area youth involved with Partners, but the current volunteer load is doing its maximum job of mentoring 71 area youth.

An applicant needs to have a high school diploma to be eligible to serve.

“Their job will be to recruit new partners and raise awareness of the agency in the community,” Summers said. “They’ll be out in the community letting people know Partners is out there.”
