Moffat County outage leaves thousands without power Wednesday

Patrick Kelly

Two major power outages on Wednesday evening affected approximately 4,200 residential and commercial structures in Craig, Maybell, Sunbeam and Elk Springs, according to Yampa Valley Electric Association.

High winds and inclement weather damaged crossarms on two transmission lines, leading to the outage.

The Maybell outage lasted approximately five hours and the Craig outage was around two hours.

John Cromer, YVEA’s general foreman in the Craig district, said repairs had been completed on the line responsible for the Maybell outage but YVEA is waiting on better weather to work on the Craig line.

The outage left one man trapped in an elevator at the Best Western Plus Deer Park Inn & Suites but Craig Fire/Rescue freed him within 30 minutes, said James St. Louis, firefighter.
