Moffat County High School wresters went for the gold this weekend. And the silver. And the bronze.
Over the past weekend, the MCHS varsity wrestling team qualified three of its roster for the state tournament, with victories at the 3A Region 4 tourney in Montrose. Issik Herod, Mikinizie Klimper and Stelios Peroulis are the Bulldogs who will be going on to the top level of the sport within Colorado.
Herod stands as the regional champion of the 126-pound weight class after the event, in which he went 3-0 with one bye and two pins, including a fall against Bayfield’s Ryan Nava that won him the title.
Klimper was 2-1 in the 160-pound bracket during the weekend, claiming a technical fall in the quarterfinals against Coal Ridge’s Gage Clemons — going 15-0 in points during the bout — and pinning Caleb Jolley, of Olathe, before meeting his match in Delta’s Derek Horn — whom Klimper defeated back in January — in the last round.
Peroulis, 3-1, felled Basalt’s Jack Huggard to start with, but lost, 5-0, by decision in the semifinal with old foe Kory Mills, of Delta. He battled hard to pin Olathe’s John Needham in the following consolation round and won, 7-2, by decision against Rifle’s Alex Rivas to secure his spot at state in the 170-pound division.
Taking additional honors were John T. Peroulis (113) and Brett Loyd, finishing 3-3 and 2-3 respectively, both ending the weekend in sixth place.
The team, which finished eighth out of 14, also took home points thanks to pins by 1-2 Drake Zimmerman (132) and 106-pound Chris Moschetti, who went 2-2 while standing in for Jay Carrico in the bracket.
State qualifiers will attend the tournament from Thursday through Saturday at the Pepsi Center in Denver.
