Moffat County High School swimmers place second at Fruita

Beginning the 2008-09 swimming season strong wasn’t at the top of first-year coach Meghan Francone’s list of priorities last week.

Before traveling to Grand Junction to compete in the season-opening Fruita Invite, Francone said she was searching for consistency, teamwork and dedication ahead of individual accomplishments.

After the Bulldogs placed second of seven teams Friday at the Orchard Mesa Pool, she just might have to add state qualifying to the list.

“The girls did very well,” Francone said. “They came very prepared and ready to get the season started.”

Moffat County fought off the season-opening jitters in the meet’s first event – the 200-yard medley relay.

The foursome of Danielle Brockman, Megan Knez, Katherine Dodd and Mary Penner blazed their way to a third-place finish, completing the required eight laps in 2 minutes, 18.75 seconds.

“The girls were nervous; I was nervous. It was a little nerve-racking there at the beginning,” Francone said. “But, the relay team started us off with a bang and really got us going.”

The Bulldogs didn’t win any of the events, but their 14 top-10 finishes were more than enough to capture second place overall.

“It was definitely an eye-opener,” Francone said. “Now, we’re right back in the swing of things.”

Francone said the highlight of the meet came in the 50-free.

Sophomore Mary Penner finished fifth in 30.43.

Not a blazing time – 26.60 is needed to qualify for state – but it was more than two seconds faster than her previous career best obtained during last season’s regional meet.

“Cutting two seconds off in the 50 is simply outstanding,” she said.

Opening week behind them, the Bulldogs are preparing for a meet Friday at Montrose High School.

“I’ve got to hand it to the girls,” Francone said. “Each and every one of them worked their butts off. I couldn’t be more impressed with how they are performing.”
