Moffat County High School student overcomes shyness to earn top honors
Annual Academic Awards night saw about 170 students recognized
One of this year’s graduates overcame her fears to courageously stand before her school this week.
Despite experiencing and receiving therapy for social anxiety, graduating senior Marisa Hulstine was one of the presenters at the annual Moffat County High School Academic Awards Night Tuesday.
“I’ve worked pretty hard throughout high school, and I have done things that were really hard for me to do. And I’ve tried to help other people with things that are way out of my comfort zone,” Hulstine said.
About 170 students were honored with academic awards, including Hulstine.
“It feels nice to be recognized, because sometimes I don’t give myself enough credit that I’ve worked so hard. It means a lot that people see that in me,” she said.
Hulstine was selected to receive a Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizen Award and Scholarship, an academic letter, one of only two social studies cords to be granted, an English cord, cords for DECA and Future Business Leaders of America, recognition by her coaches for swimming, and multiple scholarships, including $14,000 to attend Anderson University in Anderson Indiana.
“I credit my teachers with helping me out a lot,” Hulstine said.
She encourages underclassmen to get out of their comfort zones and not to be afraid to ask for help.
“I think there is a lot of stigma around talking with or meeting with a therapist, but it’s pretty normal to reach out and get help… push yourself, do things out of your comfort zone,” Hulstine said.
The ceremony included speeches and presentations by high school Principal Craig Crebar, Vice Principal Mark Shore, Daughters of the American Revolution Chapter Regent Ann Dodd, and Hulstine.
