Moffat County High School fall musical, “Guys and Dolls,” set to run next week
Moffat County High School students fine-tuned performances Thursday evening during a dress rehearsal for their upcoming fall musical, “Guys and Dolls.”
Although still working out some of the kinks, the dress rehearsal saw no major issues.
The play follows the troubles of Nathan Detroit as he attempts to secure a place for his floating craps game in New York City while his fellow gamblers Benny Southstreet and Nicely-Nicely Johnson attempt to help.
The play also follows the two love stories of Nathan and his long time girlfriend Adelaide, and Sky Masterson and Sarah Brown.
Senior Gaven Spears, who plays Nicely-Nicely Johnson, jokingly said he was typecast.
Participating in his first musical, he said he loves being a part of the production.
“I love how happy and innocent Nicely-Nicely is,” Spears said. “Even though he gambles, he’s like a giant teddy bear.”
Spears said he’s loved every minute and every aspect of the musical.
Senior Travis Johnson plays Benny Southstreet, and said he really enjoyed the songs in the musical.
Participating in plays throughout his high school career, Johnson said he no longer gets nervous for performances.
Back in the dressing room, performers waiting for scenes said it seemed like they had spent forever preparing for the show, but added they knew they still needed some work.
Melinda Hall, a mother of one of the actors and in charge of the set construction, said all she had to do was recycle, revamp and readjust pieces from previous shows to make it work for “Guys and Dolls.”
Hall encouraged Craig residents to come see the musical for several reasons.
“The music,” Hall said. “It’s a great story line about changing hearts and their passion. The music and the message are the key points. You can see Sky Masterson’s heart transformation.”
Junior Derek Maiolo, playing Sky Masterson, said the musical is one of his favorites.
Also participating in his first production, Maiolo said he liked the freedom and coolness of his character, adding it had been fun trying to model actor Marlon Brando who played Masterson in the 1955 “Guys and Dolls” film.
“It’s not your average high school musical,” Maiolo said. “It’s legitimately one for all people. Whether you’re young or old you’re able to connect. There’s gambling and a love story. It’s sexy and adventurous.”
The musical runs Thursday through Saturday at the auditorium in Moffat County High School. The show starts at 7 p.m.
