Day one is down for the members of the Moffat County High School boys golf team at the 3A State Championships, and after getting a taste of the big event, Bulldogs seek to settle down for the second round.

Dave Andujo shot a 96 and Tanner Etzler 108 during Monday’s opening round at Eisenhower Golf Course at the United States Air Force Academy.

Despite perfect conditions on the links and ample time to practice during the weekend, coach Tim Adams said the two state qualifiers were still a bit jittery.

“It’s a pretty forgiving course, a lot of wide fairways, but they both struggled,” he said. “We just didn’t putt well. The greens aren’t especially fast, but they were having trouble. That’s the long and CD short of it.”

The first day was one which certainly taught the Bulldog players the importance of preparation for high-level competition, he added.

“I think they’ll take it a lot more seriously now,” Adams said.

Andujo and Etzler will tee off Tuesday morning for the second half of the two-day tourney.
