Moffat County girls track 6th in Rifle, boys 17th
Girls 800-meter sprint medley team wins, all athletes making strides

The Moffat County High School track and field teams continue to find success as their seasons progress, the girls placing sixth and the boys 17th at the Rifle Invitational held March 13.
The girls 800-meter sprint medley relay group of Selena Hernandez, Emma Samuelson, Lauren Samuelson and Ary Shaffer won their event with a time of one minute, 58.82 seconds. The same four also took second place in the 4×200-meter relay at 1:52.85.
The two Samuelsons also joined Kaylee Durham and Josie Timmer for a third place finish in the 4×400-meter relay, recording a 4:28.89 time, while the 4×100 team of Timmer, Torre Coffey, Karmen Christopher and Maddy Olinger took fifth at 54.94 seconds.
Individual leaders among the girls included Shaffer second in the long jump with a distance of 15 feet, two inches; Emily Womble third in the 1600-meter run (5:58.34); Coffey fourth in the 100-meter dash (13.50 seconds); Hernandez sixth in the 100-meter hurdles (18.35); and Dilldine sixth in the 800-meter run at 2:40.65.
The boys’ top honors in the relay events were fifth in the 4×800 and sixth in the 4×400, run by Steven Walls, Ashley Suits, Brandon Beason and Garrett Ferguson at 9:31.12, and by Shandon Hadley, Connor Scranton, Kaden Hafey and Eddie Smercina at 3:42.50, respectively.
Smercina had the best placing of the event for the boys, sixth in the long jump at 18’ 8.5,” while Hadley was ninth in the 100 meter dash (11.89) and Walls and Suits each placed 10th, Walls in the 800 run (2:18.80) and Suits with an 11:26.41 time in the 3,200 run.
Mikinzie Klimper also rounded out the top 10 in the triple jump, landing at 35’ 7.5.”
The Bulldogs will send junior varsity competitors back to Rifle Friday, with the varsity athletes making their way to the Mickey Dunn Invitational Saturday in Grand Junction.
