Moffat County girls push volleyball streak to eight

Ian Cropp

— In 25-point games, an error or two can get swept under the rug.

But when in the fifth game of volleybally matches, those tiny errors really hurt.

Eagle Valley had a slight lapse Thursday in the deciding game against a hard-hitting Moffat County squad and couldn’t mount a full comeback.

“We just got tense, you could see it,” Eagle Valley coach Rob Crawford said. “They got tense and scared that they were going to lose, and they did.”

Moffat played with the poise of a team that had won seven in a row and extended its winning streak to eight in a 23-25, 25-17, 20-25, 25-21, 15-13 victory in Gypsum.

“It’s been a run,” said Moffat’s Angie Charchalis. “We missed a lot of serves, but we just had to pull through.”

The Bulldogs picked up on some Eagle Valley tips and used a strong block to erase an 10-8 deficit in the deciding game and move ahead 14-11, before the Devils fended off two match points.

“We try to make sure nothing hits the floor and we don’t give up anything easy,” Charchalis said. The finish “was nervewrecking.”

Moffat spread out its production on offense among Amy Dilldine, Markie Workman and Kari Griffin. The Bulldogs did a good job of hitting deep in the Eagle Valley court.

“I think Moffat hits the heck out of the ball – they found a weakness hitting our line, we usually give teams that, and they hit it down the line really well. We couldn’t figure out how to stop that,” Crawford said.
