— A Moffat County Sheriff’s Office deputy was arrested Wednesday for alleged domestic violence that took place while the deputy was off duty Tuesday.

Deputy David Domeny, of Dinosaur, is in custody and under investigation for reportedly causing property damage and verbally abusing his wife, who works as a dispatcher for Rangely Police Department, Moffat County Sheriff Tim Jantz said.

The Craig Police Department is investigating the incident for the Moffat County Sheriff’s Office in order to avoid a conflict of interest within the Sheriff’s Office, Jantz said.

The Craig Police Department also filed charges of child abuse against Domeny because the couple’s 13-year-old child was in the home when the confrontation happened, Jantz said.

No physical abuse was reported, Jantz said.

Although Domeny’s wife was not physically hurt, the law enforcement agencies still take the charges very seriously, he said.

“This could be a precursor to future events,” Jantz said. “That’s why law enforcement has to be proactive on domestic violence cases.”

Jantz highlighted that due process was followed in how the incident was handled by law enforcement agencies.

“They did due diligence to contact my office immediately. The chain of events follow proper protocol,” he said.

Domeny has been placed on unpaid administrative leave, and an internal investigation into the alleged incident is underway, according to a Moffat County Sheriff’s Office news release.
