On Thursday, Bulldog runners competed in the last regular meet of the year at Rifle Creek Golf Course, the site of the Rifle Invite, where MCHS boys placed second overall just behind Eagle Valley and girls took third after Battle Mountain and Steamboat Springs.
Emily Womble and Riley Allen led in each race, as she came in sixth of 121 girls with a time of 21 minutes, eight seconds, while he was No. 9 of 146 at 18:13.
“The boys had two groups packed well up toward the front as did our three senior ladies,” said coach Jennifer Pressgrove, noting the strategy of sticking close together helped get solid team results.
Ary Shaffer and Allie Dilldine were within seconds of Womble to round out the tail end of Rifle’s top 10, while Brandon Beason and Chris Carrouth were close on Allen’s tail, taking 13th and 19th, respectively.
Runners who were in Rifle last year saw a little bump in their times with some alterations to the path, Pressgrove said, making it difficult to gauge their progress.
“This year’s course was a little different, but we feel like the kids raced well,” she said. “We’re just looking to put everything together for a great showing at the regional meet next week.”
The 3A Region 1 event will take place Oct. 23 and 24 in Pagosa Springs.
