The end to an already solid season saw positive results at the finish line Saturday as Moffat County cross country athletes sped to a memorable conclusion.
MCHS boys placed seventh as a group during the 3A CHSAA State Championships at Colorado Springs’ Norris Penrose Event Center.
A week after capturing the 3A Region 1 title, the Bulldogs were led on the state course by senior and regional runner-up Haven Carr in 10th place, clocking in at 16 minutes 34.4 seconds.
The third year at state for the MoCo upperclassman saw his pattern of improvement continue, going from 62nd last year and 105th in 2023 to the top 10.
It’s the best individual state finish for MCHS boys since Wyatt Mortenson took ninth in 2018 — the same year saw Bulldog girls finish sixth as a group — with the entire roster contributing to the team total.
Freshman Jonas Pressgrove was 41st (17:25), junior Zach Womble 68th (17:55.3), junior Daniel Gomez 86th (18:14.4), freshman Dominic Groce 96th (18:32.1), and sophomore Ryun Pressgrove 132nd (19:51.7).
Though they faced stiffer competition from across the state, Bulldogs retained their team standing among regional rivals, with Coal Ridge 9th, D’Evelyn 11th and Aspen 18th among 20 schools.
For the second year in a row, Hayden sophomore Sydney Wattles was the lone state competitor for the Moffat County girls squad, and she jumped significantly up the leaderboard.
Wattles ran 19:50.8 to place 12th, eclipsing her No. 30 finish as a freshman.
MCHS head coach Todd Trapp said the memorable day was helped along by a warm fall climate.
“It was overall perfect weather for cross country,” he said. “The kids killed it today.”
