Mike Bingham took a 76, a tally that got him second place, only two strokes away from the day’s winner, Nate Woll, of Palisade.
Following for varsity were Torin Reed with a 95, Silas Canto at 102, Kasen Brennise at 104 and Colton Hinkemeyer’s 105.
Bingham and Reed will move on to the next level of the year, along with Shandon Hadley and Eddie Smercina, playing at the 3A Western Regional Tournament Monday and Tuesday at Steamboat Springs’ Haymaker Golf Course.
Having just played the grounds at Haymaker during Steamboat’s home tourney Sept. 3, Bingham — who placed fourth at regionals and played at the state level last year — is feeling confident about the trip down Highway 40, which will include a practice round Monday and the true event Tuesday.
“I like Haymaker, it’s a fun course as long as you play it smart,” he said.
While he, Hadley and Smercina all are pulling double duty with both golf and football, Bingham said he has seen teammates do well in the sport without helmets as the season has continued.
“They should really get it done, and Torin should be able to shoot in the 80s,” he said. “All of us should have a chance to go to state.”
Other Bulldog golfers also shaved down their scores within the past week. Both Canto and Hinkemeyer posted some of their lowest scores of the year — a 95 and a 99, respectively — while hitting at Rangley’s Cedar Ridges Sept. 10, contributing to Moffat County’s fourth place finish.
However, according to assistant coach Joe Padon, who oversaw Moffat County’s play that day, the big success story was Brett Loyd, who had a phenomenal round, dropping from a personal best of 106 to an 89.
“That’s almost unheard of,” Padon said.
