Moffat County basketball teams sit outside state polls

— The Moffat County girls and boys basketball teams have gotten off to good starts as they near the midpoint of the season, but losses have kept them out of the state’s elite.

The boys team began the season ranked seventh in the state in Class 3A, according to, which combines votes from coaches and reporters from around Colorado. But a loss in their first game of the season, and then more recently a 13-point loss Jan. 11 at Aspen, leaves them just outside the rankings this week.

Moffat County (6-2, 4-1 Western Slope League) was ranked seventh until the loss to Aspen dropped it down to 10th on CHSAANow. Despite Moffat’s two wins last week, other teams garnered more attention from voters for their results. The Bulldogs sit with 16 points from the voting process, the 11th most in the state.

The Centauri and Bishop Machebeuf boys teams both passed Moffat County this week for the ninth and 10th spots.

The girls team (5-3, 3-2 WSL) began the season with a couple points in the voting process, but close league losses on the road have dropped it out of the voting for now.

Moffat County lost at 10th-ranked Olathe in December and fell to league-leading Cedaredge last weekend by five on the road.

Both teams will have a chance to move up this weekend with a home game versus Coal Ridge and a game at Grand Valley. Coal Ridge girls are receiving votes in the CHSAANow poll, while Grand Valley is tied with Cedaredge at 6-1 in the WSL. On the boys side, the Titans and Cardinals are third and fourth in the league.
