Moffat County baseball falls twice at Roaring Fork
It was not the finish to the season the Moffat County baseball team envisioned.
The Bulldogs traveled to Carbondale and lost a pair of games to Roaring Fork, 16-4 and 7-1. In the process, they fell out of playoff contention.
They entered the doubleheader one game ahead of the Rams in the 3A Western Slope League, needing to stay ahead in the standings to hold on to fifth place. But two losses mean the Rams took over fifth.
In Game 1, the Bulldogs started strong with four runs in the top of the first inning. But the bottom of the first was a disaster as Roaring Fork poured in 10 runs of its own.
The Bulldogs would not score again in the game, and the Rams added two more runs in the second and four in the fourth for a 16-4 win. It was not the start the Bulldogs needed with their playoff lives on the line.
In Game 2, Moffat County could not get it going at the plate. They scored one run in the top of the first inning then failed to bring anyone else home the rest of the game, recording just five hits.
The Rams left the door open for a comeback throughout the game, entering the fifth inning with just a 4-1 lead. But Moffat could not get a rally going, and Roaring Fork shut the door with three runs in the bottom of the fifth.
It was the fourth straight loss for Moffat County in the worst possible part of the season. Part of the Bulldogs’ struggles could be attributed to playing so many games close together at the end of the season: four since Thursday. But that was expected to affect pitching more than performance at the plate.
The Bulldogs finished their season 6-11 (6-10 in league). While there are two wildcard playoff spots in addition to the automatic berths, it is unlikely Moffat County would receive one based on its online rankings in 3A baseball.
