Meghan Lukens: Your voice guides our work

Meghan Lukens

As the year comes to a close, I am filled with immense gratitude for your continued support and trust in me as your State Representative.

On Nov. 5, I was honored to be re-elected as your State Representative.

To the people of House District 26, thank you.

Through collaboration, communication and partnership, I am excited to continue our hard work together to make progress for Northwest Colorado.

Over the past several months, I have knocked on doors across House District 26, from Steamboat Springs to Craig, Meeker to Eagle, and everywhere in between, listening to your hopes and concerns for our Western Slope communities.

These front porches and kitchen table conversations shape my priorities for the upcoming legislative session. Whether discussing the need for affordable housing and childcare, how we can invest in our children’s future, or protecting our water resources, your input guides my work at the Capitol.

Your Voice Matters

Throughout my campaign, one message came through loud and clear: the cost of living in our mountain communities is too high.

Parents are struggling with childcare costs, hard-working families cannot find housing within their budget, and our small businesses are having trouble retaining workers. I have also heard concerns about improving cell phone coverage in remote areas, and ensuring our rural schools have the resources they need to succeed.

These are real challenges affecting our friends and neighbors every day.

As a teacher, I understand firsthand the challenges and opportunities in our education system that I heard time and time again while knocking doors.

This year, I am excited to serve as the Chair of the House Education Committee. In my new position as chair, I will work to uplift the voices of students, educators and parents as we navigate the challenges that the budget will have on school resources.

I am excited to pick up where we left off last year, including the new public school finance formula that made our students the primary focus of budget decisions and bolstered our rural schools. The 2024 School Finance Act increased our public school funding to historic levels by paying off the budget stabilization factor.

Looking Forward

When the legislative session begins in January, I will bring these kitchen table conversations with me to the Capitol. I will focus on addressing affordability — from housing costs to childcare access — through practical, bipartisan solutions that work for our rural communities.

As your voice at the Capitol, I will continue fighting for our Western Slope priorities. This means investing in our schools, protecting our water resources, strengthening our rural economies and addressing gaps in essential services.

These are issues that affect each and every one of us in House District 26, and are imperative in protecting the Colorado we know and love.

As we gather with loved ones this holiday season, I am reminded of what makes our Western Slope communities special –— the way we come together and look out for each other. While I am busy preparing for the upcoming legislative session, I want to hear your thoughts and ideas about making our region an even better place to live, work, and raise a family.

Please reach out anytime at repmeghanlukens@gmail.com.

From my family to yours, happy holidays and best wishes for the new year. I look forward to bringing your voice to the State Capitol in January.

Onward!

Rep. Meghan Lukens represents District 26, which includes Routt, Moffat, Rio Blanco and Eagle counties, in the Colorado House.
