— The Moffat County Tourism Association board decided a state athletics tournament is the kind of event it should support.

At its Wednesday meeting, the board approved funding the Moffat County High School boys golf coach, Ken Harjes, $1,500 to help put on a prime rib dinner and buy other items for the upcoming Class 4A High School Boys Golf State Championships.

The tournament will be Oct. 6 and 7 at Yampa Valley Golf Course.

“It only comes to the Western Slope once every four years at the most,” Harjen said. “I don’t think we’ll ever see it here again in my lifetime.”

The board agreed with Harjes that this is a perfect time to promote Craig and Moffat County to a ready-made batch of tourists. That is, people who are already here and could be enticed to come back.

“We want people to leave Craig with two things: what a great place this is and what a great golf course we have,” Harjes told the board. “That way, the next time they come around, they want to come back to Craig.”

Board president Tammie Thompson-Booker, who can’t make an official motion because of her position, advised the board members this would be a solid community investment.

“A state-level tournament is just a special event,” she said. “It’s be nice for us to say, as an organization, we donated the dinner for these kids.”

MCTA’s funding would go toward reducing the cost for the prime rib dinner for an estimated 150 high school players and coaches. There also would be other family members in town for the tournament, but they would not get the MCTA-subsidized dinner price, Harjes said. The coach added he would like to set aside some funds to buy water and Gatorade for players while they’re on the course.

The MCTA board also set aside up to $1,000 for additional advertising during the event, possibly “brochure-style” placemats, banners or coupons to the golf course or local businesses to encourage players and families to come back to Craig.

The tournament “is going to bring some money into town, which is good,” Harjen said. “I know there are a lot of people in the state that think they’re in Utah when they cross the mountain. They need to know what’s going on around here.”
