MCSD Whiteboard: Focused on student achievement
MCSD Whiteboard
With students back in class, it’s a good time to remember what we’re focused on at Moffat County School District.
Our mission at MCSD is to educate and inspire students to thrive in an environment of change. That’s the game. It’s the process, it’s the goal and it’s the purpose of all we do.
We consider that mission in as many senses of those words as we can. How do we educate? What do we educate? What does it mean to inspire? What does it mean to thrive? We take these questions seriously.
Children are incredible. They have so much potential for greatness within them. Some find that greatness easily. Others need more direction. All need and deserve as much help as we can possibly afford them to become the best version of themselves.
We are laser-focused on success in the classroom and all its measurable outcomes and metrics. That includes test scores, graduation rates, measures of readiness to progress in school and out of school, and much more. Ultimately, the successful, “thriving” student can look like a lot of different young adults, though. Is he thriving emotionally? Is she thriving in her relationships? Are they helping others to thrive? Are they contributing to a thriving community?
This comes down to, yes, success on state tests and on class grades and on graduation. But it also is determined in a ton of other ways. That’s why we do more than teach math and reading. It’s why, when we’re teaching math and reading, we’re doing more than ensuring a student can pass a test. Music, art, wellness, physical health, understanding how the world works, knowing — yes — how to balance a checkbook and how to create a budget … every piece matters.
And, of course, there’s career readiness. We’ve been spending an awful lot of thought and energy on the idea that thriving includes success in a career as much as it does in any other venue. We want to turn out students ready to find work they enjoy and can do well to support themselves and their future families. That’s why, at the middle school, students spend time on career-based concepts. Agriculture, trades, sciences, engineering. … Not to mention options of dipping their toes into architecture, beauty, video production, photography, child care, outdoors specialties, physical and exercise sciences, culinary arts, and so so much more.
At the high school it continues, with even more focus and energy. While learning high level math and writing, history and science and all the other critical studies, students are given opportunities to learn business skills, prepare for college or trade schools, and apprentice at real-world local enterprises. This mix of exposure and learning will create young adults ready to thrive.
We applaud our students, who have a lot on their plates and a community on their shoulders as they return to school. Let’s have a great year, Bulldogs. Time to thrive.
