MCHS works out sports postseason expense issue

Miscommunications between Jeff Simon, Moffat County High School athletic director, the Moffat County School District, and MCHS varsity coaches resulted in a preemptive hold on all postseason expenses for varsity teams this school year.

Simon said discussions took place before the 2011-12 school year about the district not paying for team expenses during the postseason due to budgetary concerns.

In past years, the school district paid for player and coach hotel rooms and gave meal stipends when teams qualified for the postseason.

While there was discussion regarding funds being withheld, Simon said a decision was never made.

The funding issue arose this week concerning the MCHS girls varsity basketball team as it prepares to travel to a state playoff game Friday in Lafayette.

The school district will pay expenses for the basketball team, as it has done in the past, Simon said.

Also, varsity teams that have already competed in the postseason during the school year will be reimbursed for expenses.

Simon said he is responsible for the funding oversight.

“Depending on the gate take in, (Colorado High School Activities Association) would reimburse the school for expenses, but typically a lot doesn’t come back,” Simon said Wednesday.

“It was a mistake on my part because no coaches were aware and a change had not been made. There will be a discussion piece at the end of the year because of budget cuts to see how we handle this moving forward.”
