MCHS spikers earn awards
With success comes recognition and members of the Moffat County High School varsity volleyball team receieved their just due.
The Bulldogs, who completed their season Saturday at the district volleyball tournament had senior Cammie Hillewaert and junior Emily Mortensen named to the all-conference team.
Seniors Megan Gregg, Sarah Haslem and Liz Knights were named honorable mention.
“It was good to see a majority of our team make all-conference,” said coach Vicki Haddan. “They worked really hard during the season and the other coaches recognized that.”
Hillewaert, who played middle blocker for the Bulldogs, was shocked to learn that she made the team.
“I was really surprised that I got picked all-conference,” said Hillewaert. “There are a lot of good players on our team and in the rest of the league.”
A year ago, MCHS finished last in the league and this year the Bulldogs finished the regular season with a 6-2 mark good enough for second place.
“I liked how we finished second place in our league after finishing last a year ago,” said Hillewaert. “I also liked how we beat some teams that we weren’t supposed to beat. I thought that the area I improved the most on was my hitting and the knowledge of the game.”
Mortensen, the team’s setter, didn’t think she would make the team.
“I was surprised to make the team,” said Mortensen. “The area that I improved on the most during the season was that I was able to play better defense and I had more confidence in myself this year and that helped me out. This season went a lot better this year than last. I thought that we did really well.”
Mortensen is already thinking about next season.
“We have a lot of people that will come in and help us, because they know how to work,” said Mortensen. “We hope that we can continue to build from what we did this season.”
“We did lose a lot of good seniors,” said Haddan. “We do have a bunch of younger players that are ready to step in and make up next year’s team.”
After two days of competition at the Colorado State High School Rodeo Association State Finals, riders and ropers from Moffat and Routt counties are making their way into the home stretch.
