MCHS junior Peroulis to play at state golf
Katelyn Peroulis learned that her best score ever was in fact good enough to play at state.
The Moffat County junior shot a lifetime low of 90 in the 4A Western Region Tournament Tuesday, only to find out that it was one stroke too high; five other girls in the tournament had shot 89 and snagged the final five individual state spots from the region, or so she thought at the time.
“I texted (coach) Ann Marie (Roberts) telling her I wanted to have practice if we could because I still could go to state,” Peroulis said about her Thursday afternoon. “She told me she honestly didn’t think I would get to go, but later I got called to the office and she was there. She said she was proud of me like it was the end of the season, but then told me I made it.”
The golf state tournaments accepts 84 players each year, but the amount from each region depends on the number of players in each region. So after the other four regions played, the last of which was Thursday, more girls from the Western Region than the 11 that originally qualified were invited.
As the next golfer in line, Peroulis’ name was among them, a fact that she almost seemed to sense was coming.
“I’m so excited I made it,” she said. “I wasn’t very upset at all (before) because I just had a feeling that I was going to get to play.”
Peroulis will be a part of the field May 19 and 20 at the Country Club of Colorado and plans on carding an even lower score. It will be her first 36-hole tournament, another aspect she’s excited about, rather than scared of.
“I want to get my score down, I want to shoot in the 80s,” she said. “It’s two days, so if you don’t play well on the first one you get to redeem yourself. You can just go out and play better.”
