Breaking the 100-stroke barrier this season has been something Samantha Fox has been unable to do.

Fox, a Moffat County High School junior, posted an 83 in the first tournament of the season March 10 at Chipeta Golf Course in Grand Junction.

But, Chipeta is an executive course without par fives and is par 59 for the course.

On regulation courses, Fox has been unable to hit double digits.

“We had been practicing inside and you can’t really tell how good anything is except for chipping,” she said. “The long shots will be different once you get outside and we were practicing putting on carpet instead of grass.”

On Monday, Fox got over the hump and posted a 97 on the par-72 Battlement Mesa Golf Course in Parachute.

Fox’s score earned her sixth place and the MCHS girls varsity golf team took second place overall out of the nine teams that competed.

“We practiced the whole week prior just on putting, so my putting improved,” Fox said of her score Monday. “I think I did pretty well and being able to practice outside will only help my score even more.”

Seniors Nike Cleverly, Callie Papoulas and Jessica Matthews all placed in the top 10.

Cleverly took fifth place with a 96, Papoulas shot a 98 for seventh and Matthews tied for eighth with a 99.

Freshman Caitlin Harjes shot a 109, but did not place.

Head coach Ann Marie Roberts said her team is improving as the season progresses.

“Every girl is getting better every week,” she said. “They are getting out there, using course management and improving.”

Roberts said course management was a concern, but on a windy day in Parachute, her team handled the conditions.

“With the wind, the girls knew how to play it and not hurt their game,” she said. “I think after this tournament, they all got more confident, which is a good thing.”

Fox breaking 100, Roberts said, was a testament to her hard work.

“She hit the ball really good (on Monday),” she said. “She practices and takes what she learns to get better.”

Fox said Battlement Mesa is hilly and her players had to play smart with good shot selections.

Roberts said her team’s shot selection Monday was excellent.

“The girls are starting to know what shot they should take and that is important,” she said. “As we move outside more than two days a week, they will learn more and more.”
