MCHS girls golf finishes 3rd in Fruita

Joshua Gordon

The Moffat County High School girls varsity golf team had all five golfers competing together for the first time this season Monday in Fruita.

The strength in numbers helped, as the Bulldogs finished in third place at Adobe Creek National Golf Course.

MCHS senior Nike Cleverly, who missed the March 17 tournament in Delta, took fourth place with a score of 94. Freshman Caitlin Harjes, who missed the first two tournaments because of commitments to the school play, shot a 99, good for eighth place.

Senior Callie Papoulas shot a 105, junior Samantha Fox shot a 106 and senior Jessica Matthews shot a 112.

"I am glad that Nike and Caitlin played really well," MCHS coach Ann Marie Roberts said. "It was kind of a tough day, but it wasn't a bad day."

With winds reached 40 miles per hour, Roberts said adjustments were hard to make.

"Nike played the wind a little, but not every shot, and the others didn't so much" she said. "Depending on the direction, the wind sometimes called for a two to three club difference."

Roberts said Harjes surprised her in her first tournament of the season.

"Caitlin really played great," she said. "I was impressed because I wasn't sure she would get her score this low this early in the season."

Unlike previous tournaments, the team was able to warm up before play started.

Roberts said she had Harjes work on her drives to keep them in the fairway.

"We shortened (Caitlin's) drive early and it kept her on the fairway all day long," she said. "I think it helped her tremendously."

Accurate shots off the tee also helped Cleverly's score, Roberts said.

"Nike played really well and stayed in the middle on almost every hole," she said. "She didn't get in trouble putting, which kept strokes off her score."

Putting has been the weakness of the team thus far this season.

Because of restrictions caused by weather, Roberts said the Bulldogs haven't been able to practice at Yampa Valley Golf Course, meaning their putting practice has only occurred indoors.

"The girls have definitely improved their putting a little," she said. "It could be better, but we will get there."

The team will travel March 29 to Grand Junction for the next tournament.

Roberts said she would work with her players on course management leading up to the tournament.

"The wind was a factor this week, and you don't always think about switching clubs," she said. "But, if you know the course, you can work with the wind better."
