Amanda Brewer took the soccer field in front of the Moffat County High School home crowd for the last time Thursday at Loudy-Simpson Park.

The MCHS senior made it count.

Trailing 2-0 against Palisade High School, Brewer took a direct shot on goal after the Palisade goalie stepped out of the goalie box with the ball in hand.

The ball sailed over the goalie’s hands and into the top left corner of the net.

“It felt pretty good to score that goal,” Brewer said of her first goal of the season. “When it went in, I just thought to myself, ‘Finally, something went in.’”

The Bulldogs, however, couldn’t mount a comeback and eventually fell, 5-2. Brewer said she wasn’t quite sure how to feel after she walked off her home field for the last time.

“It is interesting,” she said. “I don’t think it is really going to hit me until it is time to start up next year and I’m not with the team.”

Thursday’s game was also the last home game for Brewer’s fellow seniors, Ana Flores, Araceli Rodriquez, Imelda Hernandez, Justine Hathhorn and the injured Karen Bolton.

Palisade (7-6-1 overall, 7-3-1 Western Slope League) scored the first goal of the game with 7 minutes left in the first half when Flannery Davis put one past MCHS goalie Hernandez.

Three minutes later, Davis again beat the Bulldogs’ defense to give Palisade a commanding 2-0 lead at the half.

Brewer’s goal pulled the Bulldogs within one, and the two teams traded goals when Flores put a ball out of the Palisade goalie’s reach with about 18 minutes left in the game to put the score at 3-2.

While the final score showed 5-2, both of Palisade’s late goals were against an offensive-minded Bulldog defense.

“It’s been a long week,” Brewer said. “I think we did fairly well and definitely picked it up the second half.”

Thursday’s game was the third of four games for the Bulldogs (5-9 overall, 2-9 WSL) this week.

The team beat Grand Junction Central High School 5-1 at Loudy-Simpson Park on Monday and fell 2-0 to Steamboat Springs on Wednesday, also at home.

“After a battle against Steamboat (Wednesday), I think we played really good,” MCHS head coach Harry Tripp said. “We came out a little tired, but we took it to (Palisade) in the second half and just let a couple through balls beat us on defense.”

At the half, Tripp said he sat his team down and laid out the rest of the game.

“I told the girls it is hard to take on seven Palisade girls with only four defenders,” he said. “We needed our halfbacks to disrupt the ball at midfield and take advantage whenever they could.”

MCHS travels to Battle Mountain High School today for the final game of the season.

The Bulldogs lost to Battle Mountain, 4-1, on March 31at home.

Tripp said rest and hydration are key if his girls want to win.

“In our first match up, we hadn’t been outside,” he said. “Now that we have been able to practice outside more and we are communicating better, we can really take it to them.”

For Brewer, the last game of her high school career could see the Bulldogs break the school record for wins in a season.

The team is tied with the current record of five wins.

“It is my last game,” she said. “I’m going to leave it all on the field.”
