MCHS business students in Vail on Sunday for state competition

Nate Waggenspack

The Moffat County High School Future Business Leaders of America team has nine members competing at the state competition Sunday through Tuesday in Vail. Aubrey Campbell, Morgan Carrico, Erica Dilldine, Chris Goucher, Sheldon Hershiser, Kristina McLeslie, Robert Meyers, Elisa Teeter and Cassidy Wagner will represent MCHS at the competition.

Nine students from Moffat County High School will look to showcase their business skills starting Sunday.

The members of the MCHS Future Business Leaders of America team are heading to the state competition in Vail from Sunday through Tuesday. There, they will try to out-manage and out-plan their Colorado counterparts to move on to the national event in Anaheim, Calif., taking place in June.

Students from across the country take on business-related activities through FBLA. The students then have to solve various problems that they are graded on based on their solutions.

At Moffat County, participants must be taking a business class, which is where much of what they will apply at FBLA is discussed and learned, teacher Krista Schenck said.

"It's more like a co-curricular activity," Schenck said. "You have to be in a business class, and a lot of our practice time is in class. We meet outside of class a couple months before each competition and get prepared for them."

Class time prepares students for written tests they will take at each FBLA event. The outside meetings are where they get ready for role-plays, where participants are presented with a business issue and must come up with and enact a plan.

To make it this far, students had to place in the top two in their respective events at the district competition. The top two at state will move on to nationals.

Schenck has been leading FBLA for eight years, and this is one of the more successful teams from MCHS, with nine out of 16 members competing at state.

"Our state numbers, they've ranged from about three to as many as 12″ students, she said. "So this year, we're at the higher end of that."

Six of the MCHS students will be working in teams of two, and the other three will be doing individual events in Vail. Some of the students made it to state last year and have high hopes of advancing further this time.

"Nationals would be awesome," senior Cassidy Wagner said. "We made it to state last year and got 10th” in the network design event.

Wagner and teammate Morgan Carrico will be doing the network design team event, the same event they took 10th in last year. Wagner said it will involve a test on "computers and network-related things" followed by a role-play in front of judges to solve a business network problem while focusing on specific, important aspects.

More than anything else, Wagner said she hopes to advance to meet and network with more people.

"The greatest thing about FBLA is meeting the new people from all over the state, so nationals would be even better," she said. "It's going to be at Disneyland, which is cool on its own, but there will be so many people to meet and share ideas with and do some networking."

No matter the outcome in Vail, Wagner said she is happy to have joined FBLA three years ago. It started out as a resume booster but has helped her develop valuable skills going forward.

"To be honest, I started it because I knew it looked good on resumes," she said. "I've continued because it has helped me extremely with social skills. Learning how to do job interviews and have professional conversations, all of those skills I have are from FBLA."
